I’m not really one of those mongers who pines away about “the good old days,” preferring instead to make the best of whatever opportunities for mongering exist. Capitalism, which drives development, is usually not a friend of the Hobby. But the story of Sukhimvit Road, the main tourist strip in Bangkok, Thailand, bears that theory out in the most pathetic way possible. When Thaksin and his Thai Rak Thai cronies took over, they began a siege on Sukhimvit Road. At least five areas for beer bars and go-go bars were simply torn down or redeveloped. The Grand Plan was that Sukhimvit Road would emerge as a better place. Trendy condo developments and five star hotels would line the street.

But where would all the working girls go? The Bangkok Post’s online article says it all about what has become of it all… Bangkok’s Sleazy Street of Shame. And believe me, that is an understatement. When I started mongering in Bangkok, walking up Sukhimvit from the Robinson’s at Soi 19 you would see a fairly small smattering of street walkers going up to Soi 3 (near Nana Plaza). Now that strip has pretty much become an open air meat market, with pockets of girls going all the way up. Now you have 500bhat short time hookers plying their trade in front of trendy hotels as well as the new condo developments. I can’t imagine plunking down the US$300k++ they are asking for 2-bedroom flats and having street hookers and ladyboys trawling outside the security gate for johns.

Not that I am anti-prostitute. I never have been and never will be. It’s just that Sukhimvit used to be quite a tidy street before the bars got ripped down. I’d say bring back Soi Zero, Sukhimvit One, Asoke Plaza and all the wonderful firetrap bars that kept the girls in a “proper place”. But those places are now office buildings, parks and highrise condos. Unfortunately, they aren’t coming back - ever. That’s reality. So we just make the best of the worst and move on.
