And remember - the standard response to any question you put to the average taxi driver is “Yes, Mister”.

If you take a taxi at one of the big hotels, the doorman will tell the driver your destination and ensure that he does actually know where Blok M is, and how to get there. If you flag down a taxi in the street, you’re on your own.

One of the reasons I love mongering in Asia is that I often find hidden gems, which are so often right in front of my nose. When I’m in Jakarta I often go out shopping for DVDs and other things at shopping malls like Mangga Dua, ITC Kuningan and Plaza Semanggi. These malls all have a maze of little stalls selling everything from pirated DVDs to children’s toys.

Like all men I like to keep my shopping to a minimum so I tend to ignore most of the stalls. The other day I was shuffling through the stalls of Mangga Dua and my eye caught on a mannequin which was dressed in some very sexy lingerie. I stopped to admire the sexy wear, checking out the very reasonable price tag, and then I looked more closely at the shop’s offerings. Although at a glance the shop seemed to offer the regular assortment of bras and panties, upon closer inspection I noticed that the selection was much more initmate and interesting. Cute and slinky teddy sets. Decorative g-strings. Crotchless panties. And even a few bra/panty sets that I would class as “kinky.” When I asked about price, I couldn’t believe the low prices - crotchless panties/g-strings at $2, kinky bra/panty sets at $9-10. The same stuff would cost 5-10x the price at shops back home and in many cases the variety would not be available.

I bought a few sets that interested me and discovered that, especially when paired with some nice fishnet stocking sets that I had gotten before, dressing my dates up was a lot of fun and added to the mood of the session. My usual Starwood hotel options were full in Jakarta as well as some of the better North Jakarta options (e.g. Novotel, Mercure), so I ended up trying the Sparks Hotel (http://www.sparks-hotel.com/) located on Mangga Besar. Even they were full, so I ended up having to book a Junior Suite at Rp760,000/night.

The hotel advertises itself as as a “funky urban designer” hotel, which is mostly reflected in the tones of paint used in the rooms. Other than that, I didn’t see much to set Sparks apart.

Check-in was painless. Accepts MC, Visa and AMEX. Room was supposed to include Internet, but all they gave me was a coupon for 1 hour of usage. Room was spacious, but did not really constitute a “suite” room as there was no separation between living and sleeping areas. (Hence Junior Suite, I guess.) The bed was okay, but pillows were of the firm foam type. The bathroom featured a bath with an odd shower where the shower head pulled out with a tube from the tub, not very easy. So the room failed on my most two basic acceptance criterion - no comfortable bed and no strong hot shower.

To add to that, my room was located in proximity to the disco, which meant that my room was pounded with a muffled bass way past 3am. When I checked out, the clerk told me that they were working on soundproofing the disco, but I believe that this problem would not be fixed easily. On the bright side, the disco looked interesting. I spotted some nice girls travelling the elevators.

The hotel is located within walking distance to Lokasari, so if you are targeting the talent at Today Country or Mille’s, it’s an easy walk. Of course all the other Kota area delights (Hotel Travel, Pen-J, Jalan Industri) are within very short taxi rides. I can confirm that the hotel is girl friendly. No issue with bringing in the girl and no hassle for ID check nonsense.

Overall, I would give this hotel a miss unless I fell into the situation that brought me there in the first place: desperate for a room. Enjoy Jakarta, AsianRain

In Indonesia, we are just about to enter the fasting month of Ramadhan, which occurs this year in September. It’s well known to all the Jakarta expats, and anyone visiting the city who wants a real taste of the famous Jakarta night-life must put it at the top of their itinerary. Although it hasn’t been updated in a while, you can check out The Reveller’s Blok M Site with plenty of maps and information on the Blok M scene. My favorite bars at Blok M continue to be Top Gun and My Bar (by far, especially since I am a pool hound). If you are looking for great western food, Sportsman’s has a superb burger and G-String has awesome Cajun Chicken. The Reveller also has a more updated Blog M blog and discussion forum for more recent discussion on Blok M action. Many of the bar owners and Blok regulars are quite active on the forum, including Hitesh of My Bar (who is developing a nicer pool game when he isn’t keeping things in order).

It’s the beginning of the year, so at the cubicle farm that meant it was time for my annual appraisal. One personal goal that I have set for this year is to learn how to be more naughty in foreign languages. Potentially disturbing news for naughty hunters of the Atrium mall in Jakarta. One of my Atrium squeezettes informed me that for the last month the new head of mall security has implemented a crackdown on the working girls who trawl the mall. Girls who are seen in negotiation with punters or obviously stationing themselves to pickup customers are now being targeted. She said that a couple of her friends had already been nabbed by security and therefore abandoned Atrium as a working venue. Given the historic dirty reputation of the security staff for actually aiding punters and working girls, I really didn’t think this was possible.

The targeting is across the board. Girls sitting at Cappuccino and Kopi Luaat who pick up locals/mideast customers. Sweety girls who sit at the game center in the Cinema 21. The MILF girls who sit near the food stalls on the 5th floor. Even girls who loiter outside. When I was there last week I was shocked to see this in action. I entered via the Mc Donalds and immediately spotted a group of 3 sweet young things going the opposite way around the kiddie rides. We made eye contact. I went up to the KFC on second floor to pick up some lunch and then spotted the girls looking at me from the railing. Sensing trouble if they kept standing there staring at me, I wanted to give them some money to buy drinks so they could sit with me. Just as I got up, a security guard came up behind them and escorted all three of them to the security post right there at the second floor.

I finished my meal and got an ice cream waiting at the railing for them to come out. They didn’t appear for 10min so I did a quick walk to the doors leading to the parking garage where the security post is located. All three girls were sitting down there. When I later asked my squeezette what exactly is happening, she told me that girls who are nabbed have to give their personal details and they are told that if they are spotted trawling again, they will be banned permanently. There are also apparently plain clothes security making the rounds of places like Solaria and Cinema 21 to make it easier to spot girls on the game. The nabbings are more of a scare tactic, but it seems to be delivering its desired effect as I observed that the number of girls has dramatically dropped at the usual pickup spots.

All this being said, it may not be the end of the world for mall shoppers. I was able to pick up decent girls on both of my Atrium visits. There are still girls trawling, but the girls seem to be doubly cautious not to look like they are working (which is doubly difficult to do if they are talking with a foreigner). The biggest effect seems to have been on the lazy locals who monger from the tables at the 5th floor as well as the naughty Saudis who monger from Cappuccino… I saw so many of them walking around looking like they were trying to figure out where their usual easy prey had disappeared to.

Happy New Year to my faithful perverted readers! Ready for another productive year of mongering? With Ramadan long over the activity is back to business as usual in Blok M. I have been doing my usual bule bar hopping and thought I would make a quick update.

(1) M Club. This place just opened a couple months ago, replacing the building slot occupied by Lafonta disco. I had seen the staff doing practice training at Top Gun for a month, so when I saw the sign lit up and I decided to stop in. Kinda slow on the first floor, but the staff quickly guided me upstairs to the second floor lounge area which had a pool table with a few customers and girls hanging around. A couple of pics attached - outside and second floor pool table. The decor is fresh and the layout is spacious. You walk into a wide open bar/standing table area and there is a dance floor with a high ceiling. The theme of the place is “Music Lounge” and the flavor of what the DJ was spinning was definitely techno disco, although not over the top. I’m not sure how popular this music style will be with the bule crowd. Prices are the same as Top Gun. I ordered a drink and spent some time christening the pool table - nicely balanced as a new table should be. It will be interesting to see how this place develops. I just don’t see enough customers or girls on Faletehan to support another place. By the way… the girl at the pool table… I kicked her ass.

(2) D’s Place. I stopped in on Monday. There was a little contest going on with a group of girls tabletop dancing topless AND bottomless. Woo hoo. I can’t say that the dancing talent was that great - a bit long-toothed. And they didn’t waste a second to put their clothes back on once the contest was over. General situation was still bleak on the second floor.

(3) Top Gun. Still attracting a nice crowd for the earlier part of the evening. Decent band nightly, which tends to play a mix that the crowd likes. I like Top Gun best to start the evening.

(4) My Bar. For the latter part of the evening, still my preferred venue. The bulk of the girls working the floor are longtime regulars, but there are always a couple fresh talents.
