When Thaksin and his Thai Rak Thai cronies took over, they began a siege on Sukhimvit Road. At least five areas for beer bars and go-go bars were simply torn down or redeveloped. The Grand Plan was that Sukhimvit Road would emerge as a better place. Trendy condo developments and five star hotels would line the street.
But where would all the working girls go? The Bangkok Post’s online article says it all about what has become of it all… Bangkok’s Sleazy Street of Shame. And believe me, that is an understatement. Although my normal hunting ground is Asia, the company was nice enough to send me on my first business trip to South Africa. However, most reviews say that the whites/indians generally do not deliver premium service. Your mileage may vary.

My usual Starwood hotel options were full in Jakarta as well as some of the better North Jakarta options (e.g. Novotel, Mercure), so I ended up trying the Sparks Hotel (http://www.sparks-hotel.com/) located on Mangga Besar. Even they were full, so I ended up having to book a Junior Suite at Rp760,000/night.
The hotel advertises itself as as a “funky urban designer” hotel, which is mostly reflected in the tones of paint used in the rooms. Other than that, I didn’t see much to set Sparks apart.
Check-in was painless. Accepts MC, Visa and AMEX. Room was supposed to include Internet, but all they gave me was a coupon for 1 hour of usage. Room was spacious, but did not really constitute a “suite” room as there was no separation between living and sleeping areas. (Hence Junior Suite, I guess.) The bed was okay, but pillows were of the firm foam type. The bathroom featured a bath with an odd shower where the shower head pulled out with a tube from the tub, not very easy. So the room failed on my most two basic acceptance criterion - no comfortable bed and no strong hot shower.
To add to that, my room was located in proximity to the disco, which meant that my room was pounded with a muffled bass way past 3am. When I checked out, the clerk told me that they were working on soundproofing the disco, but I believe that this problem would not be fixed easily. On the bright side, the disco looked interesting. For my visit to Banana, I was disappointed by the service package provided by Nana, Although the Play Guide at the Banana website shows as “under construction,” almost all of these places have standard clear menu of “Play” services, which is almost universally advertised to include deep kiss, bbbj, 69 and cfs.
